Freedom Behind Bars

 

For over 24 years, I’ve had the privilege of preaching the Gospel inside prisons across South Africa. Through the ministry of Baasraak and now under the banner of The Prison Preacher, I’ve witnessed firsthand how the power of Jesus Christ can transform even the most broken lives behind prison walls.

What started as simple prison outreaches has grown into a movement of hope, restoration, and revival. Our mission is clear: to bring the message of salvation, purpose, and freedom in Christ to inmates who often feel forgotten by society and abandoned by the world.

​

Every prison outreach includes worship, testimonies, music, and the preaching of God’s Word. One of the most powerful parts of these outreaches is that I’m often joined by former gang members, ex-offenders, and men whose lives have been radically changed by God’s grace. Their stories bring hope to inmates who believe their past disqualifies them from a future.

Time and again, we see hardened hearts softened, broken men restored, and inmates surrendering their lives to Jesus Christ.

​

Each new believer receives a Baasraak New Testament City Bible to help them grow in their faith and build a strong foundation in God’s Word.

​

But the mission doesn’t end after a service.

​

We identify and train inmate leaders within correctional centres to continue the work from the inside. These men lead Bible studies, disciple fellow inmates, encourage others, and become spiritual leaders within their prison communities.

​

One of the most exciting developments is Unlocked Radio — a Christian radio and podcast initiative inside prison walls with the slogan:

​

“Where Rehabilitation Meets Rhythm.”

​

Through this platform, inmates are being trained as radio presenters, podcasters, storytellers, and voices of hope. They learn how to communicate life, purpose, Scripture, and encouragement to fellow offenders through media and music.

This is more than rehabilitation.
This is revival behind bars.

​

The fruit of this ministry includes:

• Gang leaders becoming spiritual leaders

• Broken men discovering identity and purpose

• Inmates becoming Bible teachers and encouragers

• Prison sections transformed by the Gospel of Jesus Christ

• Young offenders finding hope for a new future

• We do not enter prisons to bring pity.

• We go to awaken purpose.
